Former Sleep Train Arena in Natomas to become hospital – KCRA Sacramento

The Sacramento Kings and the city of Sacramento announced Wednesday that the former Sleep Train Arena is set to become the site of a hospital. The plan for the former home of the Kings includes 35 developable acres of land donated to California Northstate University for the construction of a medical school and teaching hospital, city officials announced at a news conference. “This is an incredibly special moment for the city that we all love,” said Mayor Darrell Steinberg. “Thank you for choosing our city. You will not regret it,” he added.Earlier this year, Rancho Cordova city leaders had said they were in early talks with California Northstate University to bring the new teaching hospital to the city. That news came after Elk Grove turned down the project. Until the pandemic, the Natomas arena had been sitting empty for years after the Kings moved to the Golden 1 Center in downtown Sacramento. It was converted into a field hospital in anticipation of a surge of coronavirus patients. “We have been working diligently with the Natomas community to find the right partner to redevelop the arena site and believe California Northstate University is the perfect fit,” Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé said in a prepared statement. “With a medical school campus and teaching hospital, this project will serve as a hub of innovation and an economic driver for the entire region.”
